Do I have to leave the trailer ball mount in the hitch receiver when I am not towing?

How can I determine the rating or capacity of my vehicle?
Check the tow rating of your vehicle in your vehicle handbook. One vehicle may be different from another. The ratings shown in your handbook should include weight capacities for both the trailer and the trailer ball.
How can I check my ball weight?
Ball weight refers to the weight on the front end of the trailer not carried over the axles. As a rule you should aim to have 10 percent of the total trailer weight as ball weight. This can be measured at a weigh bridge by resting the jockey wheel only on the scale.
Do I need to alter the suspension in my vehicle for towing?
The load of your trailer when connected to your vehicle, is distributed across all wheels of your vehicle using a weight distribution hitch which returns a vehicle to it's normal height. Where a vehicle (eg a Ute) permanently carries a heavier weight than a regular vehicle in it's rear cargo area, it may be appropriate to install higher carrying capacity springs. The rear vehicle axle should ideally not be overloaded to ensure maximum traction of all wheels on road surfaces.
